ATV Dimensions: Average Length, Width, and Height Explained
How wide is an ATV? Just wait, all your questions will be answered.
In this article, we’ll examine the dimensions of ATVs’ width, length, and height. The size of ATVs does vary quite a bit, often tied closely to the size of the engine.
On the other hand, I should be able to give you a reasonably good idea of what to expect by calculating an average for various engine sizes.
There are a lot of reasons why it is important for you to know ATV dimensions. One of the reasons is to ensure it fits on your truck bed or trailer.
Whatever your reasons, we took care of gathering and processing the data for you.
ATV Dimensions: Why They Matter
Most individuals would like an ATV to have a specific size for it to fit on their truck bed or trailer.
However, most people fail to take into account other reasons to consider your ATV dimensions.
For instance, a wider ATV will handle turns better and pose less risk of tipping over. Riders on the racing track would have an advantage with a wider stance ATV due to the greater speed at which they can make turns.
ATVs can only be 50 inches wide, which is the most typical restriction we’ve observed. If you are found riding with an ATV that is wider than that, they will fine you.
But more crucially, if your ATV is too wide, you could not even be able to go down some terrain.
Some pathways contain narrow spaces between the trees and other obstructions, such as gates or bridges you must fit through.
The restrictions dictating the size of ATVs we may ride may not be something we all agree on, but the terrain is the terrain, and if you don’t fit, you don’t fit.
Data Gathering of ATV Dimensions – Major Models and Brands of ATVs
We checked the spec sheets for nearly all of the major ATV brands and models to gather accurate information with which to work.
Practical constraints prevented me from including all models, although most brands are well-represented.
The complete information I have gathered so far is provided as a simple table. The motorcycles on the list are all 2019 and 2020 models.

ATV Width Compared
The width of an ATV is typically its most important measurement. Let’s take a closer look at the statistics first, though, before we examine why width is so crucial:
What is an ATV’s width? Most ATVs have a width of 45 inches to 50 inches (114cm to 127cm). ATVs typically measure 47,4 inches wide (122,7cm). Even wider ATVs have larger wheels, wheel spacers, or lift kits added to them.
So, if we examine the width of all major ATV models and brands, we see that the average width is slightly more than 47 inches.
We calculated the average width of the various engine sizes, as shown in the table above, to better illustrate the variations in width across various ATV sizes.
Average ATV Width by Different Engine Sizes
Average Width (in) | Engine Size (cc) |
42,1 | 270 to 400 |
47,4 | 420 to 570 |
47,2 | 600 to 750 |
48 | 850 |
49 | 1000 |
The statistics allow us to draw a few noteworthy observations:
- The engine size of an ATV and its width is closely related. A bike with a larger engine will often be wider than one with a smaller engine.
- The average width of an ATV between 420cc and 850cc is not all that different.
- While the biggest machines (1000 cc) are noticeably wider, the smallest ATV sizes (below 420 cc) are significantly narrower than the average.
ATV Length Compared
Now that you already know the average width of an ATV, what is the average length of an ATV? The length of most ATVs is 80 inches to 85 inches (203 cm to 216 cm).
Based on the preceding ATV length range, the average length of an ATV is 82,9 inches (211 cm). ATVs used for touring are generally 5 inches to 10 inches longer than regular models.
Once more, I calculated the average ATV length of sizes and compared them in a single table.
Average ATV Length by Different Engine Sizes
Average Length (in) | Engine Size (cc) |
77,2 | 270 to 400 |
85,3 | 420 to 570 |
81,7 | 600 to 750 |
84,9 | 850 |
86 | 1000 |
The results this time around could seem a little bit more surprising.
- When comparing the various sizes of engines starting at 420cc and up, there is no discernible difference in the length of ATVs.
- Although we have listed touring models, none fall between 600cc – 750cc. Because of this, the average for engines in this size range is lower.
ATV Height Compared
Finally, we will consider the average height of an ATV.
What is the average ATV height? The height of most ATVs is 46 inches to 52 inches (117 cm – 132 cm). Based on the preceding ATV height range, the average height of an ATV is 48,9 inches (124 cm).
The normal model is typically 1-3 inches lower than the hi-lift model.
Average ATV Height by Different Engine Sizes
Average Height (in) | Engine Size (cc) |
46 | 270 to 400 |
48,2 | 420 to 570 |
48,6 | 600 to 750 |
49,3 | 850 |
52,7 | 1000 |
This time, the comparison table reveals a quite different narrative.
- The height of 420cc to 850cc ATVs is often rather similar.
- Compared to ATVs with other engine capacities, 1000cc ATVs have a noticeably higher average height. This is somewhat true because a lot of manufacturers offer high-lift versions of their 1000cc motorcycles. However, this is not necessarily the case with smaller engines.
Final words
That wraps up this subject matter. The dimensions of an ATV can be explained in terms of its width, length, and height which matter a great deal.
Engine sizes, ATV brands, and models are the factors that determine the width, length, and height of an ATV. Now you know!
